Of course you do, if you’re over thirty-five, that is
Plot
Have you ever bought a band’s album and found that rather than new material, there are some old B-sides, remixes and a few new songs for added value? Jia Zhang-ke’s «Caught by the Tide» is in many ways just that. But in doing so, he makes a statement about his career and, indeed, the changing face of the world around him. Qiao Qiao (Zhao Tao) shares a romance with Guao Bin (Zhubin Li), but he moves on, with Qiao Qiao following in his wake. Over the years and across the country, she follows him. But when she reaches her destination, maybe what she wanted isn’t for her.
It feels more like a series of vignettes than a well-constructed work
But in reality, the plot is irrelevant because a lot of this has already been written and filmed over the years; now it has just been reused. Excerpts from the genre «Unknown Pleasures»; (2002), «Still Life»; (2006) and «Mountains May Depart»; (2015), if I remember correctly. This allows you to realistically show the two tracks over time and their uneven aging. The scenes are therefore different, but very familiar, in that it serves as a retrospective for Jia’s work, in a more direct and well-executed way than Takeshi Kitano attempted with «Takeshis»; (2005). The problem with creating a film this way is that while it’s perfectly fine as a narrative film, stepping on what you already have makes it feel a bit awkward in terms of flow. Having seen many of the movies it’s outtakes from, it reminds you of the original script and so it doesn’t feel like one story, but different stories stuck together.
Jia is very tongue-in-cheek with his take on technology
But there are some beautiful coincidences that materialize and allow Jia’s Message #39; to meet. Text messages on an old Nokia become TikTok videos on the latest smartphone. The TikTok star is more for cheap publicity than real fame and fortune; and service bots can be easily confused with simple questions. Technology has played an interesting role in shaping the nature of human relationships, especially in the last twenty years. Knowing Jia’s work, you’ll immediately recognize what’s going on here. But if you’re new to his work, this may seem like a bit of an odd film that doesn’t quite tie together.
Although they might feel like they’re watching «Still Life»; again
Some scenes don’t really seem to fit; more added as available. So this may require some background work for the uninitiated and is another one for long term fans.
